Belfast, ME at a Glance
In the late 1700s, some residents of New
Hampshire relocated to an area at the head of Penobscot
Bay on the Atlantic seacoast. A coin toss proclaimed the settlement Belfast,
named after Belfast, Ireland
(now Northern Ireland).
Today, visitors to Belfast, Maine,
will find 18th-century Greek revival, Queen Anne, Victorian and Italianate structures
that house shops, restaurants and bed and breakfast establishments. Belfast
boasts intimate settings and small town hospitality with small businesses along
the road that sell baked goods, home grown foods, crafts and antiques. Taking
a ride on the Belfast
& Moosehead Lake Railroad is one way to see what the area has to offer.
Visitors to Belfast between June and October can take in the art scene at Bearfest.
Guests can take boat tours, go hiking and, of course, eat Maine lobster all
year round.
